Why Should Councils Have Certified Staff?

Having certified, professionally trained staff is a valuable asset for any council. There are several reasons why a council should support staff members taking the time to seek a Camp Fire Certification:

  • The work required for certification will create better, more effective staff members.
  • Enhances the quality of services a council offers, which means a council can better support the youth they serve.
  • Certifying staff members establishes a base of knowledge and expectations for council staff while supporting the experience that youth workers bring to their work.
  • Any of the Camp Fire Certifications give new staff members a clear idea of what they should learn and be trained on in their first weeks and months at Camp Fire, which saves time on training.
  • Staff members can use certificates on resumes and other professional documents to support them in future endeavors, whether at Camp Fire or another organization.

Why Should YOU Get Certified?A Camp Fire Certification is useful for any Camp Fire staff member. Why?

  • Each certificate gives you the best picture of the skills you need to be successful in your role at Camp Fire.
  • It gets you noticed! Whether at your council, on your resume, or on LinkedIn, a professional certificate is highly regarded.

About the Certification

The Camp Fire Camp Staff Certification is for anyone looking to work at a camp for more than one season. The training and other requirements for this certification will demonstrate competencies in working with youth in a camp setting, maintaining a caring and reassuring presence to youth, and hosting effective camp programs.

When completed, the Camp Staff Certification can help a staff member keep or expand their role within Camp Fire, or use it as supporting material for seeking employment at other camps.

The Camp Fire OST Professional Certification is for anyone in an out-of-school time setting that is considering a career in youth programming. This certification will establish competencies in working with youth in a number of ways, as well as creating and facilitating youth-centered programming. In addition, the staff member will gain a foundation of knowledge in the Science of Learning and Development (SoLD).

When completed, the OST Professional Certification can help a staff member expand their role within Camp Fire, or use it as supporting material for seeking employment in other places.

The Camp Fire Leadership Certification is for anyone in a leadership role within Camp Fire, including both out-of-school time programs or camp settings. This certification focuses on skill sets that nonprofit leaders within the youth service field need to demonstrate–communication skills, data analysis, team management, and organization skills.

When completed, the Leadership Certification can help a staff member expand their role within Camp Fire, or use it as supporting material for seeking employment in other places.

This certification focused on exploring personal identity, checking bias, resolving conflict, and creating safe and affirming spaces where LGBTQ2S+ young people can thrive.

Upon 75% of a council’s staff completing all three courses, the council will be eligible to receive the “You Belong Here” digital badge. This badge is meant to be displayed on social media and outreach materials as a visible sign of support and affirmation for LGBTQ2S+ participants, staff, and families.
